Sabbath in Estes Park

As evening comes to Estes Park in the Colorado Mountains, a spectacular sunset hovers over a little town in the valley.

Driving to the crest of the mountain road, the view is striking as the lights from the distant houses begin to appear in the approaching darkness of nighttime.   This acrylic on canvas has an interesting story behind its creation.

My daughter Mary began painting the sky and hills, but decided she didn’t like it.  She said I could have it to paint on, so I did.

After creating the foreground, the difference in our styles was very obvious.  Adding more texture and contrast to the hills and sunset finally tied the composition together.  But I still felt like something was missing…when suddenly “the lights came on.”
