“The Night We Stood and Watched” 2003

A visit to the Gettysburg Memorial was a sobering experience. The monuments on this Civil War battlefield emphasize a terrible period in U.S. history.

Even more sobering was the fact that our excursion took place just a week after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on New York City.

I shall never forget our trip, which included a tour of Washington D.C. While we stood in front of the White House after dark, we were told that the U.S. had
begun bombing Afghanistan, attempting to destroy Osama Bin Laden.

This collage & colored pencil drawing captures the fear I experienced that night.
